Ultimate Angler is one of the subgames of the StreetPass Mii plaza. It was added in Wave 2 of the Mii plaza DLC, alongside Battleground Z, Premium Pass and Version 4.0. It's a fishing game that sees you catching fish, treasure and even legendary monsters from the waters of the StreetPass Islands.

Story

Your Mii travels to the StreetPass islands for a relaxing fishing trip. After being registered at the local fishing club by your Guide Coraline, she suggest a great spot for beginners where you should to warm up at. On the way back, a legendary monster, giant prehistoric creatures only found at the StreetPass Islands due to their unique ecosystems, rocks the boat your Mii and Coraline are using and your tackle box falls overboard.

Coraline's Dad, a marine researcher, drops in by the fishing club to inform you that these legandary monsters are vital in his research and need to be caught and studied. With the help of your trusty rod and the help of other anglers of the fishing club, you set out to catch and document every fish and legendary monster in the islands.

Gameplay

Selecting a Spot

As your tackle box sunk into the ocean, you have to borrow bait from the other anglers you travel with. You form a party of up to 10 anglers with the Mii's you met in the Plaza and invited anglers recruited by paying 2 Play Coins. Each member of your party will share 1 piece of bait with you in the colour they wear (favourite colour for tagged Miis, random for invited anglers).

You then select your fishing spot. Most of the time, you know what kind of bait fish in a particular spot like, so you can make an informed decision on where you are most likely to catch fish with the bait available to you. If you have a Mii from a different region or sub-region in your party, you get a gold or silver pass and can select additional locations.

Selecting Bait and Casting the line

After arriving at a spot, you can either fish with the bait you have or mixing bait. A bigger mix of bait attracts bigger fish.

After selecting or mixing bait, the line and float are cast. Of the several fish shadows, one will approach the float. Once the float is dipping under water, the player must press A or press on the touchscreen. If done quick enough, the fish is hooked. If the player is quicker, they'll earn a perfect and gain an advantage for reeling the fish in.

Reeling it in

On the right side of the upper screen, the fish's distance to the shore appears. The goal is to reduce that distance to 0, by either moving the circle pad in circles or drawing circles on the touchscreen. The fish can behave in 4 different ways, Icons showing the fish's behaviour from best to worst are green, yellow, red and panicking. Worse behaviour will not only increase the distance to the shore, but also put more strain on the line if you reel it in. The strain is represented by a bar in the middle of upper the screen, always filling up while reeling in. If the fish struggles hard while this bar is above its maximum, the line will break and the fish will escape. To avoid that and reduce strain on the line, one must stop reeling in. The Strategy is to reel-in while the fish is green or yellow, and to stop while the fish is red or panicking. Fish will also tire out and spend more time in the green state and panic less the longer this is going on, but taking too long will result in the fish getting away. The fish will also get away if it swims too far away from the shore without the player reeling it back in.

There are 4 types of fish that can be hooked. - Trash: Always in the green state. Guaranteed to appear if no fish likes the chosen type of bait. - Basic fish: Most Fish fit in this category and behave as described above. - Big fish: Usually the last fish of an area. They will panic more and rest less, but you will receive help from all fisher in your party, increasing your pull strength the more Miis are in it - Legendary Monster: Cannot be reeled in at first. Instead of reducing a distance, you must first tire it out by filling up a circular bar. If this kind of fish gets away, the progress to this bar is saved and hooking the fish again let's you resume where you left off.

After Catching a fish

Once caught, the fish's length is displayed, it's silhouette is unlocked if this species of fish is caught for the first time. If the species of fish was already caught before, there is a chance of treasure being caught in the line, giving you either a new rod or money.

If all bait is used up, or the player selects the option to return to the club, the fishing trip ends. All caught fish (if any) are displayed and the player receives club points and money for each fish, depending on their rarity and size. Club points increase your Mii's rank: some areas, especially ones with legendary monsters, require a certain rank before you are allowed to select them. Money on the other hand is used to upgrade and combine rods.

Back at the Clubhouse

Rods have with different names have different max Attributes in Gauge Span, Pulling Power, Durability and Resilience. Gauge Span increases the time you have to reel the fish in, Pulling power increases the distance the fish is pulled, Durability increase the maximum the strain on the line can be before it breaks, and resilience decreases the distance the fish pulls away while struggling. Few of these Attributes will be at their max however, they need to be upgraded to reach their maximum potential. Rods can also only be upgraded a certain number of times.

Different Rods can in addition have different skills, though these skills are completely separate from their name and model. Skills usually give a boost to one attribute if certain conditions are met, like having a certain number of people in your party, hooking a certain size of fish, or fishing in certain locations.

Combining rods can take 2 forms. If you combine rods with the same name, the rank of the rod goes up (indicated by a +1,+2, etc behind the name). Rods with a higher rank can be upgraded more often. Combining rods of different names will instead create a new rod with a different name and average rarity of them both, rounded up. Cobining a 2 star and 1 star rod will create a new 2 star rod, 1 star and 3 star gives a 2 star. Combining rods will make the new rod inherent the skill of the rod which was first selected.

There is also an Aquarium to display caught fish in. StreetPass tags that also own Ultimate Angler can view each others Aquaria at the end of a trip.
