The Nintendo 3DS is a family of handheld consoles made by Nintendo. It is the successor to the Nintendo DS family of handhelds which succeeded the Game Boy line and brand for Nintendo as well as being the handheld counterpart to the Wii. The 3DS gets its name from the stereoscopic 3D feature it provides which is present on the original 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 3DS, and New Nintendo 3DS XL which the Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS lack.

The Nintendo 3DS was the first Nintendo system in which all games were available in both retail and physical copies, unlike the Wii and Nintendo DSi where some games were only available as Wiiware and DSiware digitally, excluding the Virtual Console on the Wii which allowed people to download emulated Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Nintendo 64 (N64), Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, and NEC TurboGrafx-16 games. The Nintendo 3DS is also the first Nintendo portable system to feature and support Miis which first debuted on the Wii. Several Nintendo 3DS games can make use of Miis such as Mario Kart 7, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Mario Tennis Open, Tomodachi Life, and Miitopia. Miis can be created on the 3DS using the Mii Maker app which is the 3DS equivalent to the Mii Channel on the Wii.
