Revision as of 23:46, 29 April 2023
Welcome to my containment zone! Feel free to make any edits you deem necessary.
Battleground Z
Battleground Z (called StreetPass Zombies outside of North America) is one of fourteen sub-games in StreetPass Mii Plaza, developed by Good-Feel. It was added in the second major update on April 16, 2015 alongside Ultimate Angler and the StreetPass Mii Plaza Premium feature. In Battleground Z, the player's Mii must visit various locations in the city of Hobbiville to rid them of zombies, rescuing survivors and attaining their weapons in the process. Each level in this sub-game involves multiple missions that the player must complete in order to progress. By reaching certain milestones in Battleground Z, the player is able to earn Plaza Tickets.
Story
Battleground Z takes place in the once-vibrant city of Hobbiville, located within StreetPass County. When the player's Mii is riding the subway to shop for hobby supplies, they suddenly notice an abandoned smartphone ringing from the seat opposite them. Their curiosity leads them to answer the phone, next to which they find a mysterious vial. The person calling is Dr. Scarlet, who asks the Mii if they are "impressively well-armed" and urges them to find a weapon immediately amid the recent and overwhelming zombie invasion. Just as the player's Mii comes across a stray Wii Remote, a group of Shamblers — the most rudimentary type of zombie — somehow find their way into the subway car and begin their attack. When the zombies are defeated, Dr. Scarlet tells the player's Mii that she will attempt to create a cure for the zombie infection, though she requires help to succeed. She also reveals that the smartphone is her own, and that she lost it on the way to her father's research center. Before momentarily hanging up, Dr. Scarlet informs the player's Mii that there are survivors with unique and useful weapons based on their respective hobbies.
After safely making it to the subway station, the player's Mii begins their quest to rid Hobbiville of zombies. Here, they meet several identical Hobbiville residents who provide weapons to fend off the enemies within this level. Upon defeating all the zombies at the subway station, the player's Mii proceeds to other regions of the Downtown level, collecting various weapons along the way. To allow the Miis at the local hospital to be flown to the Stadium where it is safer, the player's Mii must rid a nearby parking lot of zombies. They must then clear the zombies from a back alley to ensure safe passage. However, the helicopter is unable to land in the Stadium until the player's Mii defeats a menacing Mega Slimebacker and collects one of four cell samples required for Dr. Scarlet's cure.
On Dr. Scarlet's orders, the player's Mii then enters the Shopping Mall level to clear out survivors in the quest to gain a second cell sample. Once all the zombies are dealt with, Dr. Scarlet learns that there is a fire in one of the mall walkways that the player's Mii is tasked with extinguishing. After the fire is put out, she also informs the player that survivors are using the mall as a base for supplies. Protecting survivors' supplies from the hordes of zombies requires defending a food cart at the mall plaza and retrieving bottles of water from the warehouse. The player's Mii must then vanquish and collect a sample from Belinda Munch, a large and insatiably hungry zombie located within the food court. When these tasks are complete, the survivors at the Shopping Mall are airlifted to the Stadium.
In the Uptown level, the player's Mii is tasked with rescuing more survivors, allowing them to access a bus system put in place by Dr. Scarlet. The tasks in this region include retrieving a lost dog, collecting fuel for the bus from the gas station, and clearing debris from the highway. The player's Mii is subsequently asked to scout around the cornfield that the highway passes through. Here, they are distracted by a row of Combustocorn in the middle of the road, allowing Bubba and Cleetus Rotts to ambush them. Fleeing in fright, the player's Mii then ends up in the middle of a field, where they must battle the two zombified farmers and collect the next cell sample.
Now in the Countryside level, the player's Mii must make their way to the power plant to collect the final cell sample and stabilize Hobbiville's power supply; however, doing so necessitates that they pass through a dangerous tunnel and subsequently defend the gates of a graveyard from zombies trying to escape. At the power plant, the player's Mii must repair four panels while fending off zombies and toggling light switches to make the glowing panels more visible. After fixing the generators, the player's Mii is required to pass through a hydroelectric dam, guarding an employee and steadily proceeding to the exit. Dr. Psymad is soon encountered at the power plant, where he is found dumping an unknown substance into the reservoir to create Voltoad. Once this boss is defeated, the final cell sample is collected, though Dr. Psymad is nowhere to be found.
The player's Mii finally arrives at the Research Center level, where a survivor is found in peril as they attempt to enter the facility. Once the player's Mii has entered the research center, they must defend the lab, preventing zombies from entering and sabotaging Dr. Scarlet's plans. Upon defeating all the zombies, the player's Mii encounters Dr. Scarlet, who is close to finishing work on her cure. In the laboratory, the player's Mii is asked to position four tanks containing components of the cure into their proper places on glowing floor panels. The player's Mii then accompanies Dr. Scarlet on the service elevator to the roof of the facility, though the both of them must contend with zombies that seek to steal the cure. At the rooftop, they encounter Dr. Psymad, and it is revealed that he is supposedly Dr. Scarlet's father in zombified form. When the player's Mii strikes Dr. Psymad, the latter resorts to releasing the zombification virus through a nearby spray machine from which Dr. Scarlet planned to dispense the cure. After releasing the virus, Dr. Psymad consumes a potion that turns him into the much more powerful Super Psymad.
Once Super Psymad is defeated, it melts into a puddle with a small alien at the center who, as it turns out, was posing as Dr. Scarlet's father all along. At long last, the player's Mii is able to dispense the cure, restoring peace and harmony to Hobbiville and allowing its residents to enjoy their hobbies once more.
Gameplay
To earn weapons in Battleground Z, the player can recruit survivors for 2 Play Coins each. Once a survivor is rescued during a mission, they will provide the player's Mii with a weapon that corresponds with the survivor's favorite hobby, as set in StreetPass Mii Plaza. There are 25 hobbies to choose from, but survivors without an associated hobby will provide a tote bag upon their rescue. While survivors can take the form of random Miis, Miis that have been previously been met via the StreetPass functionality of the Nintendo 3DS are also eligible to be survivors. These types of Miis offer the option to team up upon being rescued, where they will use their weapon to help the player's Mii defeat zombies. If a survivor is not rescued in time, they will turn into a zombie and become hostile towards the player's Mii. A counter in the lower screen keeps track of how many survivors the player has rescued during a mission.
Although rescuing survivors is a key aspect of the gameplay in Battleground Z, the main focus of this sub-game are the missions that come with each stage. Such missions normally require the player's Mii to defeat all the zombies in a stage, though guarding a Mii from zombies and performing tasks within a set time limit are also common. In stages where the player's Mii must protect another Mii from harm, straying too far from the Mii in question will cause them to freeze in fear, leaving them defenseless and vulnerable to the zombies. In boss stages, the player must defeat the boss to progress.
The player can hold the right shoulder button to speed up transitions and cutscenes in Battleground Z.
Combat
The player's Mii can use a weapon's charged attack by holding and releasing the A button. However, a given weapon can only perform three charged attacks before its energy is depleted. Moreover, a weapon will lose durability when the player's Mii is damaged by a zombie, and it will break if the durability gauge in the top left corner of the screen is depleted, forcing the player to find a new weapon.
The player's Mii can switch between weapons either by pressing the left or right shoulder buttons, or by tapping a weapon's icon in the lower screen.
- Weapon durability
- Slash and smash attacks
- Charged attacks
- Critical hits
Levels
Batteground Z involves five levels: Downtown, Shopping Mall, Uptown, Countryside, and Research Center. Each level in this sub-game includes six stages, with only five being mandatory to complete. The fifth stage of each level is a boss stage, while the sixth is a reprise boss fight that is unlocked once the player collects a set amount of Medals.

In some stages of Battleground Z, there is a Creepy Courier that the player can defeat to obtain a Plaza Ticket. Once this zombie is defeated, the Plaza Ticket will lie on the ground for a moment before it either vanishes or is collected. Invincibility item
While Creepy Couriers sometimes carry Plaza Tickets, they can also be seen carrying a mysterious potion that renders the player's Mii and allies invincible for a brief moment. This invincibility allows the Miis to charge the zombies head-on without taking damage, and they also gain a significant speed boost. The invincibility item is useful for clearing out large hordes of zombies in a short time frame.
