The Nintendo 3DS is a family of handheld consoles made by Nintendo, first released in 2011. It is the successor to the Nintendo DS family of handhelds. It is the handheld counterpart of the Wii U. The 3DS gets its name from the stereoscopic 3D feature it provides which is present on the models with 3D in the name. The models with 2D in the name lack this feature, but can still use all 3DS features that do not use 3D. It is the first Nintendo portable system to feature and support Miis as a system feature. Miis can be created on the 3DS using the Mii Maker app, which is the 3DS equivalent to the Wii’s Mii Channel. It also supports amiibo (although it requires a special adapter on non- "New" models). | The Nintendo 3DS is a family of handheld consoles made by Nintendo, first released in 2011.
The 3DS had five revisions. The first two were the Nintendo 3DS XL, which added a bigger screen, and the 2DS, which was a budget option that got rid of the fold and the 3D. The New Nintendo 3DS added built-in NFC for amiibo, a right control stick, and ZL and ZR buttons, and had other slightly better specs with its own small library of exclusive games. The New Nintendo 3DS had its own variants, the New Nintendo 3DS XL essentially combines the XL and "New" together, and the New Nintendo 2DS XL was the same as its 3D counterpart but with the 3D removed and a smaller hinge.
