Phrases are a feature in Tomodachi Collection and Tomodachi Life where a Mii can say a phrase chosen by the player under various conditions. Phrases can be activated by simply entering a Mii's apartment. They can also be triggered by specific events, such as an angry phrase being used when a Mii just had a fight, or a sad one when they have had a breakup or rejection.

Tomodachi Collection

There are five types of phrases: a catchphrase, a Happy phrase, a Sad phrase, an Angry phrase, and a Worried phrase. A Mii can be given a catchphrase as its reward for leveling up. The four emotional phrases can only be given when a Mii has a problem. Only Mii's catchphrase can be changed at any time when the Mii isn't asleep.

Tomodachi Life

Like Tomodachi Collection, a Happy phrase, a Sad phrase, an Angry phrase, and a Worried phrase can be customized. The four emotional phrases can only be given when a Mii has a problem. Different with Tomodachi Collection, the phrases other than catchphrase also are able to edit at any time when the Mii isn't asleep if the phrases have been given. In Japanese version, first person pronoun (自分の呼び方, jibun no yobikata) was added. A Mii can be given a first person pronoun as its reward for leveling up. In International version except Japanese one, each type of phrase now has 8 accompanying animations that can be given to the Mii with the phrase; however, any animation can be chosen for any type of phrase.
