Baby (Tomodachi Life)
- This article is about the child of two Mii's in Tomodachi Life, and should not be confused with the type of Wii Fit user that are also called babies.
Babies are the children of married Mii couples in Tomodachi Life. They may only be born if the game has the setting turned on for Miis to have children in the Town Hall. A married couple must have a positive relationship with each other in order to want a child. When a married couple wants to have a child, one of them will display a love problem icon in their apartment or home, and will tell the player that they have been thinking of having a baby. If their request is accepted, a baby will be born to the couple a day and a half later, with the player receiving a phone call from the husband of the couple to inform them. This can be put off if the player does not have the game turned on at the moment a day and a half has passed, essentially delaying the birth and subsequent growing up of the child to when the player opens the game next. A single married couple can only take care of one child at a time.
When the player is called to the house of a couple who have just had a child, the mother will be holding them in the living room, with the father standing off to the side. The mother will then ask the player a series of questions to determine the baby's gender, appearance, name, and personality. Once all of these have been decided, the game will display the message "[Child] was born to [Father] and [Mother].", and take the player back to the island.
Counting the day that they are born and introduced to the player, babies grow up over the course of five days, with the child fully grown and ready to leave the house as soon as the sixth day arrives. They will stay in their parent's house at Mii Homes while they are growing aside from family outings to hangout locations; at least one parent must be present at home to care for the child, and married couples will never fight nor divorce while they have a child at home. The baby's appearance and behavior will change each day of their growth. When the child is fully grown, the player must decide whether to move them into an apartment as a permanent resident of the island, or send them off as a traveler. They are then given the opportunity to edit the child's profile one last time before viewing their family album and sending the child on whichever role was picked.
Initial customization
Through the questions given by the child's mother, the player is allowed to customize several aspects of a baby's profile on the day of their birth.
Question | Notes | Player Responses |
---|---|---|
"Are you hoping we had a boy or a girl?"(US)/"Which would you prefer it to be, a boy or a girl?"(EU) | The baby's face is hidden until this question is answered. |
|
"How does [he/she] look?"(US)/"Does the baby look the way you expected?"(EU) | The baby's appearance is generated from a mix of the mother's and father's features. This can include lipstick, gray hair, or a beauty mark. |
|
"We like the name [Name]. What do you think?"(US)/"We thought of a name together, and it's... [Name]!"(EU) | In the Japanese version, the first name suggested will be a combination of the parent's given names. In other versions, all names are picked from a preset list. |
|
"What kind of personality do you think [he'll/she'll] have?"(US)/"What kind of personality do you want the baby to have?"(EU) | This will affect the color of the baby's clothing as they grow up. |
|
Note that after this initial determination, the baby is unable to be modified until they are fully grown and ready to leave the house.
Growth
Babies will gradually grow and change in appearance and behavior for each day that passes.
- Day 1: The baby appears either held or in a bassinet.
- Day 2: The baby begins to learn to crawl.
- Day 3: The baby's hair begins to further develop, and they start learning to stand for short periods of time.
- Day 4: The baby begins to start walking.
- Day 5: The baby's face starts to finalize its design, their hair develops further, and their eyebrows take on their final color. They begin to walk and run efficiently, and they will start talking with a higher-pitched sound effect than their parents.
- Day 6: The baby grows up and is ready to leave the house. Their hair may or may not develop a final time.
Clothing
The clothing a baby wears changes each day except for the sixth, and appears different depending on the baby's gender and personality. As babies cannot be given items by the player, these are the only clothes they wear while they are growing up. However, babies can still be dressed up in certain outfits in the photo studio when taking child photos. The photo studio is also the only way to see the names of children's clothing.
- Day 1: Cuddling clothes
- Day 2: Crawling clothes
- Day 3: Bouncing clothes
- Day 4: First-steps clothes
- Days 5-6: Boys'/Girls' toddling clothes

Babysitting
If a baby is upset, their father may call the player on a cell phone to bring them to the house, asking them to help out by playing with the child. The player can also choose to play with children at their home at any time, provided they are awake and currently in the house, by tapping the Babysitting button that appears next to the Visit button when viewing their house in Mii Homes. In either case, the player can play with children based on their current age. Flowers will appear over the baby's head when their mood has been improved, and a black spiral will appear when they have been upset.
If the player has been called to calm a crying baby down or enters the house to babysit while the baby is upset, the parent or parents present will tell the player "[Baby] just won't stop crying. Can you help out?". If the player manages to improve the baby's mood enough to stop their crying while babysitting or quit out after trying for long enough, the parents will express gratitude towards the player for helping and give them a random good as thanks before causing the player to leave. If the player enters the house to babysit while the baby's mood is neutral, the parent or parents present will instead simply ask "Will you play with [Baby] for a while?" and let the player babysit for as long as they want. While children can be seen upset during all stages of growth, the parents will only call the player to help calm them down for the first three days of the baby's growth, and babysitting a four or five day old child will never show them as upset.
Moving out
Starting at the sixth day of a child's life, their parents will immediately phone the player to call them to their home and announce that their child has grown up. The player then must choose to make the child a permanent resident of the island, causing them to move into their own apartment, or send them off to travel the world, having them head to the island's port and wait for boats that arrive through StreetPass. Following this choice, the player is given the opportunity to modify their appearance and profile. This includes their voice, which by default is set as a mix of the parents' voice settings.
- If the player chooses to have the child stay on the island, the mother will say "My thoughts exactly!" and the child will receive new clothing (a hoodie and shorts for boys and a jumper for girls) in a color that corresponds to their personality. In the Japanese version, the Miis will move to the father's apartment for the rest of the interaction. After modifying the child's profile, they will say "You've been such a great friend to us!"
- If the player chooses to send the child off as a traveler, the father will say "My thoughts exactly!" and the child will change into a white traveler outfit (with blue shorts for boys and a red skirt for girls). The player can also give them a message to spread to the islands they visit. After modifying their profile, they will say "I can't wait to see the world!"
After this, the father will give the player the child's family album, which also adds the item to the player's collection. If there is not enough space for the child in the apartments or port (depending on where the child was chosen to go), then the child will wait at their home until there is room.
Family album
A child's family album consists of several photos and videos in sequence, showing each stage of a child's life with their parents. It is viewed automatically when it is first given to the player, and serves as the conclusion to the child's growth and presents the game's ending credits.
Afterward, all received albums can be viewed under "Child Info" in the town hall, which can save up to 50 albums before the earliest ones are deleted; the player can choose to lock up to 49 albums they want to save to prevent them from being overwritten. The parents can appear wearing any combination of the clothes in their current wardrobe when the player views the album, even clothing given after the album was first viewed. The child will always appear in the clothing matching whatever personality they were given during the final modification of their profile immediately before receiving the album. If the child becomes a permanent resident of the island and their personality or appearance is changed further, the album will not reflect these alterations.

Trivia
- After the first friendship is formed on the island, the game will inform the player of the dating, marriage, and children mechanics. It will then show a scene imagining the player's Mii having a child with an unknown Mii of the opposite gender, with their Mii being the one holding the baby regardless of gender.
- Parents can call the player on a cell phone regardless of whether either parent owns the cell phone gift.
- If a baby is planned to be born, but the parents divorce before the birth occurs, the baby's birth will be cancelled. This is also true if one or both of the parents is deleted from the island, or if the option to have children is deactivated at the town hall. Once a married couple has a baby, they are unable to be deleted until the baby has grown up and left the house.
- All babies will have blond eyebrows by default if they have eyebrows, regardless of whether either of their parents has blond hair. If their hair is a different color, their eyebrows will eventually become that color as they grow.
- While editing a newborn baby who has not yet had their personality determined, their clothes will appear as gray.
- Grown children who have moved into their own apartments will refer to their parents as "mom" and "dad" in family-specific flavor text when the player taps their speech bubble, but will call them by their names in all other situations. This also extends to referring to the player, calling them "[Player's Mii]'s look-alike" rather than "[Mom/Dad]'s look-alike".
- If one or both of a grown child's parents are deleted, their family album will also be deleted regardless of whether the child is still living on the island or has been sent out to travel. The album will not be removed if only the child themself is deleted.
