Wii Karaoke U by JOYSOUND (カラオケ JOYSOUND for Wii U in Japanese) is a game part of a karaoke service for the Wii U developed by TOSE, published by Nintendo and features licensed song from the JOYSOUND online song library. It is a successor to the Wii game called Karaoke Joysound and is a crossover between the series of karaoke services Karaoke Joysound and the Wii series, using Miis as characters and having Wii in its name. While the game itself was free the player had to purchase tickets via the Nintendo eShop in order to sing a song.
The service launched on December 8, 2012 in Japan and October 4, 2013 in Europe, later closing on March 31, 2017 for Europe, the game never released in North America.
A successor for the Nintendo Switch named Karaoke Joysound Switch developed by Xing (who worked on the original Karaoke Joysound) and published by Nintendo was released exclusively in Japan in 2017, also using Miis as characters.
Gameplay
The service operates via a ticket system, somewhat similar to the original release of Wii Sports Club, with the player having to purchase a ticket with the length of the session that it wanted to use the service, with the leght of the ticket ranging from an hour to a full day, with a 30 days ticket also being available. After the ticket was used, the uses can select any song available on the service, which varied between Japan and Europe.
Similarely to a real life karaoke room, the user have to select the songs that it want to sing on the Wii U GamePad and designate a singer, the singer's Mii then appearing on screen while the song is playing. While the song is playing, the top of the screen displays a music sheet with the correct pitch to sing to, the player having to sing with a microphone. The singer's Mii sings and dances to the rythmn of the music on the rest of the screen with the lyrics displayed in the middle.
