Tomodachi Life, known as Tomodachi Korekushon: Shin Seikatsu (トモダチコレクション 新生活) in Japan, roughly translating to Tomodachi Collection: New Life, is a life simulator game for the Nintendo 3DS released in Japan in early 2013, and worldwide in mid-2014. It was both developed and published by Nintendo. Tomodachi Life is the second and final game in the Tomodachi series, proceeding Tomodachi Collection. It, along with the Tomodachi series, was succeeded by Miitopia a few years later.
For sake of uniformity with the rest of the wiki, the article describes the North American version of the game. See Regional differences below.
Gameplay
Like most life simulators, Tomodachi Life is open-ended and features no detailed story. The game starts off by letting the player name an island the Miis will eventually live in. The player is then prompted to create a Mii that resembles oneself. Eventually, the player will be able to make Miis whenever they wish and continue the various aspects of gameplay.
Mii Creation
Tomodachi Life has the same Mii-making features as the 3DS system, but with more personal features. After creating the Mii itself on one page, players must write a full name for the character, as well as a nickname that will be used more often. A birthday can be added, and doing so will allow the game to celebrate it when the date passes in real time. A Mii's favorite color and creator are input on this page and gender can be readjusted. If a birthday is not entered, the player must at least determine if the character is a grown-up or a child. The relation to the player can also be decided to indicate if the Mii is of a family member (thus preventing them from entering a relationship with the player's Mii).
The next page allows the player to adjust the Mii's voice. There are six preset voices, but a random voice can be generated and a custom voice can be configured. For the custom voice, the player can toggle its pitch, speed, quality, tone, accent, and intonation.
The final page determines a Mii's personality. The personality is broken up into five parts (names taken from the US version): Movement, Speech, Expressiveness, Attitude, and Overall. Each aspect has a sliding scale, and the personality depends on how each part is adjusted. Personalities play an important role in Tomodachi Life in that they affect interactions and which Miis will be compatible with each other.
After a Mii is created, it will move into its apartment. The room's default interior will depend on the Mii's personality.
Locations
Location | Image | Description |
---|---|---|
Town Hall | The Town Hall is where the owner of the island can perform administrative and technical functions, as well as check stats. Options include: | |
Mii Apartments | Mii Apartments is where much of gameplay occurs. Miis live in their own apartments, and will often request the player to help them or play with them. Miis interact independently, and will oftentimes hang out with other Miis in their own apartments. At night and sometimes throughout the day, Miis will fall asleep and dream. Players can enter and watch these dreams, and when they exit the Mii will wake up and an item related to the dream will appear next to them. When they are asleep at night, players can draw on their faces.
As more Miis are made, the apartment building will upgrade to hold more apartments until it caps at 100 Miis. | |
Food Mart | The Food Mart is where most Food is purchased, aside from food received as gifts or prizes, or special markets. Food is used to feed Miis, which is not required, but recommended. Feeding Miis rewards the player with XP. Each day the Mart has a new set of 5 Daily Specials, which are randomly selected items not purchased yet. Once a Special is purchased, it is added to the In Stock area and may be purchased at any later time. There are four food categories in the In Stock section: Main dishes, Side dishes, Desserts, and Beverages. Daily Specials may contain any of these. Usually a Shopkeeper staffs, the store, although sometimes a Mii fills in, and occasionally two Miis. | |
Beach | The Beach is located at the edge of the island. Islanders relax, dig holes, and walk on the sand. The only event planned for the beach is Judgment Bay, where the player draws on the sand, and the Miis pick their favorite drawing. | |
Fountain | The Fountain is a place in Tomodachi Life that Miis may visit. Every day and night, all the islanders will gather for a collection of money, and each gives a coin or a bill. Activities at the Fountain include:
| |
Clothing | The Clothing Shop is where the player may purchase new Clothing to give to islanders. All clothing consists of full outfits, so only one outfit may be worn at once. The exception is Hats, which are worn separately, and purchased at the Hats Shop. Similar to the Food Mart, each day brings a new set of up to 5 random outfits in the Daily Special section of the Clothing Shop. The remaining Seasonal and In Stock sections contain all clothing previously purchased, or won from activities. The Seasonal section lists unlocked clothes for the current real-life season, which is either Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter. A Shopkeeper usually operates the shop, unless a Mii is working part-time.
The five categories for clothes are men's, women's, unisex, dress, and specialty. Specialty outfits can include animal costumes, or rare outfits like the Space Suit, which is received when a Mii goes to space. | |
Mii Homes | Mii Homes is where all of the houses owned by married couples are located. Only married couples may own a house, and they receive it directly after being married. Miis retain their apartment after gaining a house. Their children reside in the house as well, until they grow up. At that point, the player chooses whether the child will go out and adventure, or become an islander and receive an apartment. The player may observe the families in their houses, similar to the apartments. Sometimes the Miis are not at home, if they are at an event, visiting a friend, or in their personal apartment. If the Miis are not at home, there is no way to call them home.
The houses have a living room, kitchen/dining room, and bedroom. Miis can be seen watching TV, eating dinner, sleeping, chatting, or taking care of a child. Miis cannot be visited while in their house, rather, the player selects a Mii to visit. When this happens, the doorbell rings, and the Miis have a shocked face momentarily. Then the player is transported to the selected Mii's apartment. When the player is finished visiting the Mii, they are transported back into their house. The only way to visit the house directly is when babysitting young children, which parents will sometimes ask the player to do. | |
Hats Shop | The Hats Shop is where hats are purchased for Miis. It functions very similarly to the Clothing Shop - with Daily Specials, Seasonal, and In Stock items. The main difference is that the hat categories are regular, costume, and hair accessories. There are 69 regular hats, 32 costume hats, and 56 hair accessories. A Shopkeeper operates the shop, occasionally replaced by a Mii working part-time. | |
Port | The Port is where travelers from other islands arrive, as well as depart from the player's island. The Port is usually empty, as Miis cannot visit it. The Guest Book can be viewed at the Port at any time, which lists information about travelers and islands that have visited the player's island. | |
Pawn Shop | The Pawn Shop allows the player to sell items for money. It is operated by a Shopkeeper or part-time Mii. Each item has a set price, depending on its rarity in-game, and real-life value. Unlike a real Pawn Shop, items may not be purchased or re-purchased. There are no item categories, and items are listed alphabetically. Pawning items is an easy way to make money, and many of the items serve no purpose to the player. | |
Interiors Shop | At the Interiors Shop, the player may purchase new apartment styles for their Miis. As with other Shops, there are up to 6 random new Interiors in the Daily Specials section, and and In Stock section for previously purchased Interiors. There are also Special interiors, which are not listed in the In Stock section, and are unlocked via various means. Interiors are generally more expensive than Food or Clothing, especially Special Interiors. A Shopkeeper or part-time Mii operates the shop. | |
Concert Hall | At the Concert Hall, the player creates and watches a solo or group musical performance of Miis. Before a Mii may sing, they must unlock a song genre. For a solo performance, the player selects a Mii, an available song genre, and then may tweak the song lyrics. For group performances, the player must create a group and song ahead of time. Groups consist of 2-7 Miis that all share a learned song genre. Groups and songs can be saved, and played at any later time. In both modes, the player can pick the outfits of the singers, and depending on the genre, the number of dancers. | |
Import Wear | The Import Wear Shop is where the player may purchase goods received from other islands via the Port. These can include Clothing, Hats, and Food. The Schoolgirl uniform is pre-unlocked from "Nintendo Island", and the player may also purchase the item from their own island. The Shop is operated by a Shopkeeper or part-time Mii. | |
Campground | The campgroud is where traveler Mii's come to stay. They can have problem bubbles pop up like with Miis in homes and apartments. You can also buy special foods from campground miis. | |
Observation Tower | The Observation Tower (Roof in JP) is a tall tower where Miis can go, and events happen. The only event planned for the Observation Tower is Quirky Questions, which can be played anytime on demand. In this event, the player fills in the blank for 1 of 3 randomly selected questions and asks it to 8 random Miis. The blanks can also be auto-filled. This is repeated twice. All of the questions are about the Miis, who may raise their hand if they fit the question. Sometimes a Mii acts shocked about another Mii's response. | |
Compatibility Tester | The Compatibility Tester has two modes: Compatibility Forecast, and Compatibility Rating. In Compatibility Forecast, two Miis are selected, and their relationship status is shown in the form of a 7-day weather forecast. The 4 relationship categories are Work/Study, Chats, Leisure, and Love. The Love category is only available for Miis of the opposite gender, and not available for in-game relatives, or kid/adult relationships outside Japan. The ratings are partly random, and partly determined by personality types.
In the Compatibility rating, two Miis are selected, and their friendship or romantic compatibility is tested. Similar to the other mode, Miis of opposite gender receive romance ratings if they are not related in-game, and both kids or both adults (except in Japan). Otherwise, the Miis receive a friendship rating. Unlike the other mode, the ratings are static and never change. They are again partly random, and partly based on personalities. | |
Rankings Board | The Rankings Board lists rankings of Miis by specific qualities. The 10 rankings are Vitality, Popularity, Boy Charm, Girl Charm, Pampered, Friendship, Romance, Island, Traveler, and Splurge. The rankings are unlocked by various means. They change often, and have no impact on gameplay. | |
Leisure Island | Except for Mii News and Photo Studio, Leisure Island is locked until a Mii confesses their love. Leisure Island is introduced through a news flash. | |
Amusement Park | At the Amusement Park, Miis can enjoy peaceful activities such as going for a walk as well as more exciting pastimes such as riding a roller coaster. There are three events that can take place at the Amusement Park:
Miis will sometimes also go to the Amusement Park to confess their love to another Mii or converse with friends. | |
Café | The café is used as a retreat where Miis can socialize or partake in leisure. Events held at the café comprise the following:
Miis can also use the café to confess their feelings to another Mii, go on a date, or even break up. Generally, Miis at the café will simply sit and eat, drink or read a book. | |
Park | Events at the Park are the following:
If no event is going on, Miis can go to the park and to play, or sit and read. | |
Photo Studio | At the photo studio, the player can take photos of either a pair of Miis, a group of up to nine Miis or the entire island. The player can pick a setting for the shoot, and set the expressions of the Miis. While a Mii couple has a child in their house, a new feature is temporarily unlocked allowing the player to take photos of the child with or without their parents.
All photos and in-game screenshots can also be viewed from the Photo Studio. | |
Mii News | Mii News is the official news broadcasting service of the island, operating from a building of the same name. The news flashes, which occur at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day, typically involve a random Mii reporting on strange or humorous events affecting other Miis. Broadcasts can also announce important developments on the island such as unlocking new regions of the map, or the player's birthday. After the broadcast, 3 random Miis in random locations are asked for their input on the story, and they give random responses.
Past News is recorded, however only 50 items max can be stored. Older news will be deleted. The player can "lock" specific stories they want to keep around, which will prevent them from being deleted. | |
Nintendo 3DS Image Share | This location is just a launcher for the Nintendo 3DS Image Share application, which is now defunct. |
Regional differences
- Main article: Tomodachi Life/Regional Differences
Since Tomodachi Life is meant to relate to the player and stay grounded in reality most of the time, four different versions of the game were released to accommodate cultural differences: one for Japan, one for North America, one for Europe and Australia, and one for South Korea.
